10 Ways to Make Your Home More Salable
Before the sign goes up, these 10 easy steps will go far to help a buyer like your home.
- Get rid of the clutter. Throw out file stacks and the old newspapers and magazines. Pack away most of your small decorative items. Store your out-of-season clothing to make more room in your closets. Clean out the garage.
- Get rid of furniture that won’t be making the move. We have great charities that will take much of it.
- Wash your windows and screens and open the shades and blinds and curtains. – Use our Find a local business tool to get a good window washer.
- Keep everything extra clean. Touch up walls and doors. Clean floors, the stove and the refrigerator (yes buyers will open the refrigerator).
- Get rid of smells. Clean carpeting and drapes to eliminate odors. Smoke and pet smells might take a little more work. Open windows.
- Put higher wattage bulbs around the house and consider taking out your energy efficient bulbs in dark rooms (slow to light up).
- Minor repairs needed create a bad impression. Make that repair. About once a week we see a note taped to the front door telling all how to operate a tricky lock.
- Tidy your yard. Cut the grass, rake the leaves, trim the bushes and edge the walks. Put a pot or two of bright flowering plants out. As you’re working, remember the old saying: when weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
- Have the walks and driveway fixed up.
- Clean your gutters, roof gardens might be the rage in some parts, but not gutter gardens.
